Homework at Home?
Girl Shocked - Homework Tutor Tips

The most common complaint we hear are the challenges associated with Homework.

We often hear that Homework is a nightly battle in most homes.

There can be a lot of stress around asking children to complete their set of questions or read-aloud their home-readers.

Sometimes the difficulty is associated with parents spending multiple hours a week explaining concepts that are too tricky for the student to understand.

If this sounds all too familiar, believe us when we say…

You. Are. Not. Alone!

To put it simply, sometimes kids don’t view the home as the place to do schoolwork. Home is the place they can relax and be themselves around their family. The last thing they want to do is complete their Homework.

So how can you overcome these struggles at home?

There are many ways parents can help their child in doing their homework regularly. Creating a safe learning environment and a proper routine is just some of the ways parents can support their child from home. Setting up a routine can be done with the parents or with a qualified tutor.

Here are our suggestions to get that Homework done at home!

  1. Learning Environment! Set up a dedicated, homework-friendly area. You will need to ensure this place has limited distractions and good lighting. The kitchen dining table or a study desk are great options.
  2. Routine! Routine! Routine! Setting up a regular time and set time to complete Homework can help children get used to working at home. Setting a time limit, also lets children know what the expectation is of them.
  3. Work With Your Child! Sitting alongside your child will help them stay motivated and on track. It’s also important as this helps you view if your child is completing the homework properly and if they are learning. Use this opportunity to help them understand the task so they do it themselves.
  4. Give Lots of Praise! It is important to recognise that Homework can be hard work for children, as the work should be targeted at their learning levels. We often advise parents to give positive feedback to children regularly. Find at least one positive comment to say, before proceeding into some critical feedback.
  5. Plan the Homework ‘Sessions’! Sometimes, children can find the pile of Homework activities overwhelming. They may find it difficult in knowing where to start. At the beginning of sessions, we advise parents to sit down with their children, look at the homework tasks and plan the order of activities. Breaking up the activities to complete over the week can also help children get into a daily routine.

Sometimes, even if you put all these measures into place, it can still be challenging to get children motivated to do their Homework.

This is where we come in…
