Just because someone has the knowledge of a topic, doesn’t mean they know how to teach it.
Why?
Not everyone learns the same way. It takes a skilled and experienced person to adjust the learning content to suit the students individual learning style. There are several ways a person may learn best, and there are several different ways a topic, concept or skill can be taught.
An experienced teacher has years of university training and classroom practice where they have learnt how to teach subject areas such as Maths, Spelling, Reading, Writing, and Science. They have also attended several different professional development workshops where they have learnt how to improve and craft their teaching style.
For example, not every learner learns how to approach double-digit addition the same way. They may prefer the split strategy, compensation, number line (jump strategy) or vertical addition.
Not only this, but some people prefer to learn this verbally by listening to the teacher, visually by watching the teacher, kinaesthetically by using objects with their hands to count or they may prefer to read the technique and write it down to understand. A teacher has the skills to teach to the child’s preferred strategy whilst also targeting the preferred learning style.
Bottom line: There are so many ways a learner can learn, and a qualified teacher has the skills to get the most out of a learner.
After knowing all of this, did you know in Australia anyone can call themselves a tutor without any formal training or qualifications? Choosing a tutor who just ‘knows’ a topic without the knowledge of ‘how’ to teach it can be risky.
