NAPLAN is the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. It is a standardized test that is administered to all Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. The test is designed to assess students’ achievement in reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy.
NAPLAN was introduced as a way to measure the progress of Australian students over time. The test is also used to compare the performance of different schools and jurisdictions. NAPLAN assesses students’ achievement in the following skills:
- Reading: NAPLAN assesses students’ ability to read for meaning, to understand the structure of texts, and to use their knowledge of language to interpret texts.
- Writing: NAPLAN assesses students’ ability to write effectively in a variety of genres, to organize their ideas, and to use language correctly.
- Language conventions: NAPLAN assesses students’ knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Numeracy: NAPLAN assesses students’ ability to solve mathematical problems, to use mathematical concepts, and to reason mathematically.
Can I help my child prepare for NAPLAN?
There are many things you can do to help your child prepare for NAPLAN. Our team have put together a few ideas:
- Read together: Reading is one of the most important skills that students need to succeed on NAPLAN. Make sure that your child is reading regularly and that you are discussing what they are reading with them.
- Write together: Writing is another important skill that is measured by NAPLAN. Encourage your child to write regularly, and provide them with feedback on their work.
- Practice math problems: There are many ways to practice math problems. You can find workbooks, websites, and apps that offer practice problems. You can also create your own practice problems.
- Talk about language conventions: Language conventions are the rules of grammar and usage. Help your child to understand the basic rules of grammar and usage, and provide them with feedback on their writing.
- Help your child develop good test-taking strategies: This includes things like reading the instructions carefully, managing their time wisely, and staying calm under pressure.
- Create a positive learning environment: Make sure that your child feels comfortable asking questions and that they know that you are there to support them.
It is also important to remember that NAPLAN is just one measure of your child’s academic achievement. There are many other factors that contribute to a child’s success in school, such as their motivation, their work ethic, and their overall attitude towards learning.
