Mid-year parent teacher interviews are happening this term, and it’s a valuable opportunity to gain insight into your child’s progress at school.
Parent teacher interviews tend to be a short 10–15-minute meeting with your child’s classroom teacher. Some schools have two parent teacher interview nights a year whilst others only have the one. So, it’s important to make the most of this time with your child’s classroom teacher to find out how they are progressing academically and socially.
Why meet with your child’s teacher?
The goal of a parent teacher interview is for the school and parents to work collaboratively together to create a positive and supportive learning environment for the child. After the parent teacher interviews, you want to leave knowing how your child’s teacher is supporting your child and some strategies you can use outside of school to ensure learning is consistent across the board.
It is important to come prepared to parent teacher interviews, so you can use the time to share your own observations about your child’s learning and behaviour. If you have any concerns about your child’s behaviour, learning or social interactions, this is the time to bring it up. It’s important to ask open-ended questions that encourages the teacher to elaborate and provide detailed information.
Questions to Ask at the Parent Teacher Interviews
To ensure a productive and informative meeting takes place, here are some essential questions you may want to consider asking your child’s teacher:
Academic Performance:
- How is my child performing in [Subject: Maths, English, Reading, Writing, Science etc.]?
- Are there any specific areas where my child excels?
- Are there any areas where my child might need extra support?
- What are some strategies we can use at home to support my child’s learning in [Subject: Maths, English, Reading, Writing, Science etc]?
- How are they meeting the curriculum expectations?
- What can we do at home to support my child in their learning?
Engagement:
- How does my child typically participate in class discussions and activities?
- Does my child seem engaged and motivated in class?
- Are there any specific learning challenges we should be aware of?
Social and Emotional Development:
- How does my child interact with their peers?
- Does my child seem happy and well-adjusted in the classroom environment?
- Are there any concerns you have about my child’s social or emotional well-being?
- How does my child manage conflict with classmates?
Communication and Collaboration:
- How can we best stay informed about upcoming assignments and class activities?
- What is your preferred method of communication (email, phone calls, online platforms)?
- How does the classroom encourage collaboration and teamwork?
- Does my child seem comfortable asking questions in class?
- Should we meet again next term to track our child’s development?
- Does my child need an Individual Learning Plan created to support them in their learning?
Looking Ahead:
- What are some learning goals you have set for my child this year?
- Are there any upcoming projects or assessments we should be aware of?
- How can we best prepare my child for any upcoming standardised tests?
- Are there any resources you can recommend to further support my child’s learning at home?
- Should we consider additional support (Such as tutoring, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or other intervention services) outside of the classroom to support our child?
It’s important to use the parent teacher interview time effectively so together you can set some goals and if needed organise some additional support services such as tutoring to fill in learning gaps. Remember, a successful parent teacher interview is a two-way street! Facilitating a working together relationship puts the child’s success first.
