Helping Your Child Learn to Handwrite

Handwriting is a skill that has been around for centuries, and there is no doubt that the rise of technology has had an impact on the way we write today.

In the past, handwriting was essential for communication. We used to write letters, take notes, and sign documents by hand. This is however fading out, as we can now do all of these things electronically. Today we type up emails and documents, and sign electronically on computers. As a result, we do not use our handwriting as much as we used too.

This has led to some concerns that the art of handwriting is fading. Some people worry that children who grow up in the digital age will never learn how to write properly. They may not be able to form letters correctly, and their handwriting may be illegible.

Handwriting is still a fundamental skill children need to learn to succeed in school and in life. It is a complex skill that requires children to develop fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and visual-spatial awareness.

So how can you help your child develop handwriting skills at home? We have put together 7 tips:

  1. Start early. The earlier your child starts learning to handwrite, the easier it will be for them to master the skill. You can start by teaching your child the basic shapes of letters, such as circles, lines, and curves.
  2. Make it fun. Handwriting should be a fun and enjoyable experience for your child. There are many different ways to make handwriting fun, such as using colourful markers or pencils, or writing about topics that your child is interested in.
  3. Be patient. Learning to handwrite takes time and practice. Don’t get discouraged if your child doesn’t master the skill overnight. Just keep practicing and providing your child with support.
  4. Use a variety of activities. There are many different activities that you can use to help your child learn to handwrite. Some common activities include:
    • Tracing: Tracing is a great way for your child to learn the shapes of letters. You can trace letters on paper, on whiteboards, or even on their own hands. There are some great handwriting books you can purchase and use at home.
    • Make it personal: When your child first learns to write, start by getting your child to practice writing their name. Get them to trace, copy, decorate (colour in) or paint their name. You can then move onto other family member names, pets, toy names etc.
    • Drilling: Drilling is another great way for your child to practice writing letters. You can create worksheets with letters for your child to practice writing, or you can simply have your child write the letters out repeatedly.
    • Writing stories: Writing stories is a fun way for your child to practice writing letters and sentences. You can start by giving your child simple prompts, such as “Write a story about your favourite animal.” As your child gets better at writing, you can give them more complex prompts.
  5. Praise your child’s efforts. It’s important to praise your child’s efforts, even if their handwriting isn’t perfect. This will help them to stay motivated and continue practicing.
  6. Be a good role model. Children learn by watching the adults in their lives. If you want your child to learn to handwrite well, make sure you are a good role model. This means writing legibly and neatly yourself.
  7. Encourage your child to write frequently. The more your child writes, the better their handwriting will become. Encourage your child to write in a variety of settings, such as in school, at home, and in their free time. It is better to practice frequently for shorter 5-minute periods of time than doing long sessions.

If you are concerned about your child’s handwriting, talk to their teacher, a handwriting specialist, or a qualified tutor.
