This could be due to a ‘learning gap’ your child may have on a topic!

A learning gap is a disparity between what the student has mastered and what is ‘expected’ of them in that year level. A student may have a learning gap in one subject area or multiple areas. A learning gap in one area such as reading may impact the learning gaps in another subject area such as writing or spelling.

A child’s education builds on previous learnings like building blocks.

If your child does not understand an expected previous concept, such as multiplication, how do you expect them to understand division? Or if your child has not grasped sounds such as initial sounds (i.e., a, c, f, u etc) or diagraphs (i.e., bl, th, sh, ch) how do you expect them to sound out a more complex word like ‘fish’ (i.e., f-i-sh)?

But how do you know what the learning gap is?

Teachers know all the building blocks one must master before a new concept can be fully understood. A teacher can assess, then make informed decisions on where they should teach the child and then develop a program to target the child’s learning needs.
